Wallcovering, upholstery and curtain fabrics add colour, texture and warmth to the restaurant's interior
At Vondels Chefbar in Utrecht, Studio Daphna Laurens translated a chef-driven restaurant concept into a spatial narrative built around openness, interaction, and atmosphere. The design is deliberately restrained – rather than relying on overt gestures, it emphasizes materiality, proportion, and tactility.
Daphna Laurens begins every project from colour. It is the first decision, the one that sets everything else in motion. Vescom's richly coloured collections made that first step feel natural, and from there, materiality followed. For restaurant Vondels, that process led to three products that each play a distinct role. Recycled upholstery fabric Auckland set the tone – its two intermingling yarns create a third colour where they meet, giving the fabric a playful, three-dimensional depth. That quality of surprise defined the starting point for the rest of the interior. Sheer curtain fabric Teon, chosen for its open weave, softens and filters the natural light without closing off the space. It balances warmth and brightness while keeping the interior open and connected. Wallcovering Florence adds texture and depth to the walls – bringing that extra layer of materiality.
Every detail in this interior – from furniture and lighting to finishes and custom elements – was developed as part of a single, coherent concept. Vescom's material solutions weren't layered on top of that concept; they were part of how it was built. The result is a welcoming interior where the colours, textures and warmth came together exactly as imagined – with a richness that carries through the entire room.

"The colours, the textures, the warmth – it all came together exactly as we imagined it. There's a richness to Vescom's materials that carries through to the space itself."
