Restaurant De Aarde: a layered fine dining interior in Antwerp
Michelin-starred Restaurant De Aarde is housed in a protected townhouse dating from 1913 in Antwerp’s Zurenborg district. Designed by Verbraeken & Biset, the restaurant interior brings the building’s rich history together with contemporary comfort through architecture, atmosphere and a carefully considered palette of materials.
De Aarde unfolds as a sequence of spaces, each with its own atmosphere, intimacy and sense of comfort. Original architectural details meet refined interventions and an interplay of materials, from polished stone to soft, tactile surfaces.
Together, these different layers help shape an interior where architecture and materiality become part of the dining experience.

Monte and Fuga: upholstery that brings comfort and tactility
Used across the dining seating and cushions, Monte and Fuga add a soft, tactile layer to De Aarde’s material palette.
Monte brings the distinctive qualities of mohair velvet. Naturally strong yet luxuriously soft, its 100% mohair high pile creates sumptuous upholstered surfaces while contributing to physical and acoustic comfort. Cradle to Cradle® Bronze certified, Monte is woven in Vescom’s own eco-conscious weaving mill in the Netherlands.
Fuga introduces a different textile character. Its soft chenille yarn gives the upholstery warmth and a cosy, homely feel. Made with 79% recycled polyester FR yarn from locally sourced post-consumer PET bottles, Fuga is woven locally in Vescom’s German weaving mill.
Together, the two upholstery fabrics complement the harder surfaces and architectural details throughout the restaurant, contributing to its sense of comfort and intimacy.
