Our next step in innovative sustainable material solutions reuses waste from the medical industry to create vinyl wallcovering with 30% recycled content.

As true makers of materials with our own production facilities in the Netherlands, we’re committed to making our material solutions more sustainable. With every concrete step forward – including continually increasing the proportion of recycled content in our material solutions – we’re reducing our environmental impact.

A big increase in recycled content

One of our focus areas is tackling waste in industries where it’s hard to avoid, such as healthcare. Hospitals and care facilities rely on single-use vinyl-based materials to save lives. Medical materials that don’t meet the strict safety and hygiene standards of the healthcare industry during manufacture are discarded before they even reach the hospital floor, resulting in a lot of waste.

We saw an opportunity to reduce this waste and the amount of virgin material in our products by incorporating post-industrial medical waste from factories in Belgium and the Netherlands into new vinyl wallcoverings: Clay and Luxor. The medical waste is shredded into flakes, melted and incorporated into wallcoverings that achieve a total recycled content of 30%, a big step up from our previous levels of 13-15%, demonstrating our commitment to continuous improvement. Making waste work requires a new way of working – less investment in raw materials and more investment in processing.

Despite their origins, Clay and Luxor show no trace of the medical material. Clay evokes the warmth of hand-plastered walls, while Luxor is inspired by traditional handwoven linen. These products meet the highest standards of durability, hygiene and fire safety making them innovations in contract wallcovering that are suitable for all types of interiors. They represent a significant step towards making the most of waste materials – without compromising performance.

In today’s digitally oriented world – where we’re surrounded by sleek screens and smooth surfaces – there’s a growing desire to slow down and reconnect with materials that feel human, tactile and imperfectly beautiful. <a target="_blank" href="/en/products/clay">Clay</a> – with the rustic look of traditional hand-plastered wall finishes such as Moroccan tadelakt or Venetian stucco – conjures up images of relaxing holidays in sun-drenched climes. The embossed vinyl wallcovering has echoes of artisanal pottery and ceramics – materials shaped by hand over time. Expressive and unique, Clay is ultra-matte, highly structured and irregular. True to its name, Clay has a palette of warm, sunbaked colours that capture the essence of natural clay surfaces. The 16 earthy, matte hues – ranging from deep green and brushed terracotta to warm ochre – have powdery pigments that could have been dug straight from the ground.

Artisanal weaving meets modern luxury

Making is in Vescom’s DNA. It’s the spirit with which the company was founded, and it’s remained ever since. ‘My father had a few principles,’ says CEO Philippe van Esch about Joop van Esch, who founded Vescom in 1971. ‘He wanted to be a manufacturer – to create products. And he had a design-driven philosophy, which wasn’t common at that time. He made creativity and design a distinguishing factor between Vescom and other brands.’

This principle led to a philosophy of interweaving the design and solution of our materials: wallcovering, upholstery and curtain fabrics for the contract market. Driven by innovation and product excellence, our in-house experts understand and can tap into the benefits of each material – whether natural or man-made – to develop material solutions for every interior.

Vescom’s designs are produced in our own production facilities and weaving mills in the Netherlands, Germany and the United States. Having 100% ownership of our production gives us the agency to not only scrutinise everything from our raw materials to our manufacturing methods with a focus on sustainability and well-being, but to actually develop, make and distribute eco-conscious interior materials – a crucial factor in providing transparency to our customers.
